Innovative Approach to Poultry Farm Waste Management: A Solution for Environmental Sustainability

Worldwide poultry meat production has seen a significant increase over the past few decades. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), world poultry meat production soared from 9 to 133 million tones between 1961 and 2020, and egg production shot up from 15 to 93 million tones 1. In 2021, the world's broiler meat production amounted to about 101.2 million metric tons and is forecasted to increase to about 103.4 million metric tons in 2023.

Intensive poultry farming is a major contributor to environmental degradation, with emissions that impact various environmental compartments, including air, water, and soil.2

Poultry farming activities can have a negative impact on the environment, including acidification, pollution of surface water and groundwater, eutrophication, air pollution, increasing the greenhouse effect, drying, smells, noise, and pollution with heavy metals, pesticides, and toxic substances. 3,4

Processing bird droppings can involve various approaches, such as:

• Composting: Bird droppings can be composted along with other organic materials to create nutrient-rich compost for gardening and agriculture.

• Biogas Production: Bird droppings can be used as a feedstock for biogas production, where the organic matter is broken down by bacteria to produce methane gas for energy generation.

• Fertilizer Production: Bird droppings can be processed to extract the valuable nutrients and transformed into commercial fertilizers for agricultural use.

Imago Engineering5 from Malaysia is working on a project that makes poultry farms waste-free within the framework of the institute. The project processes manure from poultry farms, which reduces CH4 emissions by 99 percent and eliminates contamination of water and land. Imago Engineering is the first company to create technology that makes poultry farms waste-free. The company's R&D center and its waste-free approach to poultry farm waste management represent a remarkable step forward in environmental safety of production by recycling agricultural wastes. The project is an innovative solution to the problem of waste management in poultry farms. It not only reduces CH4 emissions and eliminates contamination of water and land but also produces alternative protein and organic fertilizers. The project's full automation and low production costs make it an attractive solution for poultry farms looking to reduce their environmental impact.
